CHAPTER TWENTY

Monday, September 18

Monday morning everyone seemed preoccupied, even our clients. Parker and Tyler were anxious over what they’d witnessed during last night’s game. In fact, several of us were. Was Corey going to be okay? I sure hoped so.

“They’re saying it’s his hamstring,” Tyler explained as he looked up from his phone. “According to this article, they think he’ll be rehabbed and go right back to the game. But they’re saying it might be a couple weeks or more.”

“I feel terrible for him.” Mari sighed. “He lost his mom, he lost his dog, he’s really been through it.”

I felt sick every time I thought about our decision not to return Ginger to him that first day. If we had done that, she wouldn’t have disappeared twenty-four hours later. She would be in his house in Houston, probably curled up in his lap right now, bringing the comfort that only a dog could bring.

Before diving into my work, I texted a quick HOPE YOU’RE OKAY.

To which he responded, WILL BE. WITH TIME.

I responded with the praying hands emoji.

Around noon Trina stopped by to talk to Mari. I happened to be in the break room with Mari when they were meeting. I offered to leave, but they both insisted it was fine to stay put.

“Hey, I wanted to let you know to be on the lookout for that reporter who was here the other day.”

“Which one?” Mari said. “There were a bunch of them.”

“Lance the Legend. He’s kind of tall, has sandy-colored hair. Nice looking.”

“Yeah, definitely remember Lance the Legend.” Mari laughed. “The one with the fake hair. Why am I supposed to be on the lookout for him?”

“I don’t know.” Trina eased her way down in a chair at the table next to us. “He somehow got my new address and showed up outside our gate this morning. Wyatt gave him the boot.”

“How in the world did he get your information?” Mari asked.

Wrinkles formed on Trina’s brow. “I have no idea. None whatsoever.”

“Trina, I didn’t give it to him, if that’s what you’re thinking. I would never do that.”

“None of us would,” I chimed in.

“No!” Trina put her hand up. “I’m not saying that. I know that he’s slippery. I’ve dealt with him before. And I know it’s easy for people to find addresses online these days.”

“Yeah, I do it all the time,” Mari said. “A paid service.”

So, that answered that question. Mari had turned into a supersleuth.

“You’ve dealt with Lance the Legend before?” I directed this question to Trina.

“Yep.” She nodded. “Kind of hoped to avoid him once I moved to Texas, but I guess that’s impossible. He really gets around.”

Cassidy and Brianna chose this moment to join us for their lunch breaks.

“Are we interrupting?” Brianna asked.

“We can always eat in my office,” Cassidy said.

“No, please stay,” I countered.

“We’re talking about Lance the Legend,” Mari explained.

“Ugh, I can’t stand that guy.” Cassidy opened the refrigerator and grabbed a meal from inside. “I stopped watching the news because of him.” She popped the meal into the nearby microwave and pressed some buttons.
